More Than Just Halloween Cookies!
A chill is in the air, and costumed witches, ghouls, and ghosts are everywhere! The month of October has long been associated Halloween, everyone’s favorite spooky holiday, which makes it the perfect time to order some Halloween cookies to pass out to eager trick-or-treaters. But, instead of waiting until the end of the month to indulge, there are plenty of lesser-known holidays coming up that deserve some recognition!
It’s the best time of year to share some love with a sweet treat—so here are some celebrations to mark on your calendar that justify even more cookie-eating!
National Cookie Month
Cookies have existed since around 7th century A.D., originating in what is now the Middle East (Iran). These countries began harvesting sugarcane and using it different doughs, baking them to form hard, long-lasting wafers. From there, its popularity spread to Europe, and then came to America around the beginning of the 17th century. Even the word “cookie” can be traced to the Dutch word “koekje” which means “little cake.”
No wonder cookies are so well loved! After the Industrial Revolution, more formal recipes and cookbooks became commercially available and all the ingredients for cookies (flour, sugar, butter) became standardized. Today, traditional sugar cookies are so popular, they’re considered Ohio’s official state cookie! And when they’re topped with our rich buttercream frosting, they become irresistible!
National Homemade Cookies Day – Oct. 1
Get ready to pull out your mixer and beaters—October 1st is National Homemade Cookies Day! Start off the month with some delicious, homemade cookies that you can share with your family, friends, and neighbors. Whip up a couple batches of your favorite cookie types, like classic chocolate chip, peanut butter, or oatmeal raisin. Bake cookies from scratch for someone’s birthday, anniversary, or other special event this month—or, if you’re not that skilled in the kitchen, order a loved one a handcrafted cookie bouquet!
National Baking Week – Oct. 14 – 20
You can always procrastinate on making treats until the middle of October, which is National Baking Week! The holiday is more commonly celebrated in the UK and was founded in 2007 by Pyrex in homage to the history of pastry making. Many civilizations, such as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans enjoyed baking and then selling or trading their goods. But it wasn’t until the preservation technology of the 20th century (refrigerators) and the greater access to ingredients, that individuals could attempt baking at home! Now a days, we have so many versatile, customizable options! For example, ordering a gluten-free cookie bouquet or gift basket of allergen-sensitive cookies is so much easier to do. And what better way to kick off a week of baking than by sharing some yummy cookies to commemorate National Dessert Day… which happens to fall on October 14! We did mention October was the sweetest month!
National Chocolate Day – Oct. 28
Ok, who doesn’t love chocolate? It’s versatile in baked goods or as a snack, it tastes delicious, and it has been proven to lower stress. Thousands of years ago, cocoa beans were so valuable, the Aztecs used them as currency! Once chocolate was invented and came to Europe, however, sugar was added to make it less bitter—yet also much more processed. Good thing we have cookie bouquets especially made for chocolate-lovers! Whether you prefer milk or dark chocolate, the options are endless: oreos, brownies, and M&M cookies are just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, in the U.S., a shocking 90 million pounds of chocolate candy is sold the week leading up to Halloween!
Halloween – Oct. 31
Last but not least, everyone needs a sweet treat to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve! Dressing up in scary costumes, carving jack-o-lanterns, pulling pranks, and throwing spooky-themed parties have always been part of America’s traditional Halloween festivities. But going door to door trick-or-treating became mainstream in the early 20th century thanks to the influence of candy companies. Nothing screams Halloween like some Halloween cookies shaped like creepy jack-o-lanterns, smiling candy corns, or spooky ghosts!
Order some homemade cookies to be delivered to your door this October, no matter the reason. Whether to pass out to trick-or-treaters or to throw a party celebrating National Cookie Month, our cookie bouquets are hauntingly delicious.
